Delicate Violence [2017]
This series, which is autobiographical in nature, deals with the act of silencing women, especially as it applies to the lives of South Asian immigrants.
This series consists of self-portraits with either powerful or tranquil poses, with fabrics such as lace acting as physical barriers in front and/or around them. It is impossible to see the figure entirely; the viewer sees only what they choose to pick up on and respond to; thus the figures are not seen as entire beings.
The comfort depicted in the paintings is interrupted with something simultaneously delicate and violent, which makes one wonder: if you are being silenced, hidden, or interrupted, can you ever truly feel at home? Can you ever feel comfortable or powerful?
